The company Synutra, which is the third biggest baby food manufacturer in China, plans to build a whey factory near the city of Fribourg, Switzerland.
The new factory shall pulverize whey and then export it to China, where it will be used for baby food. China had several scandals due to contaminated milk powder, because of this, foreign milk products (especially baby food) are now very popular and Chinese parents often refuse to buy milk powder from domestic producers. In the past, Synutra only bought its whey powder in Europe, directly producing it there has many advantages, for example the possibility to guarantee the product’s traceability.
Switzerland is not the only European countries to which Synutra plans to expand, last year, the company already opened several factories in France.
