Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer and (since 2018) second largest smartphone manufacturer, wants to expand in Switzerland.
The company plans to construct two new research and development centers, one in Zurich and one in Lausanne. In addition, Huawei also plans to expand its marketing services to other companies. Lausanne and Zurich are chosen as locations for the R&D centers because the Federal Institutes of Technology (ETH) are located there.
Huawei is already present in the Switzerland and quite successful, thanks to its competitive prices. Besides smartphones, it provides for example infrastructure as well as software for the telecom operators Swisscom and Sunrise.
How much new personnel Huawei plans to employ in Switzerland has not been decided yet. According to a Huawei cadre, it shall be a massive expansion, but still not as big as Google’s research center (which currently employs 2,000 people in Zurich).
