The Shanghai-based SAIC Motor Corp Ltd and the electric vehicle start-up NIO are the first two Chinese companies receiving licenses allowing them to test self-driving vehicles on public roads. The companies will be able test the vehicles on 5.6 km long public road in Shanghai’s Jiading district.
In July of last year, when there were no rules yet available for such a test, Baidu’s boss Robin Li did a marketing stunt and personally tested a self-driving car on Beijing’s roads. The action stirred up a controversy and it was clear that rules are needed.
According to the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology, Shanghai will probably open more roads for self-driving cars in the future.
